I worked on the skill areas that these community leaders suggested
Date: 14-Jul-2011

My first job goes back twenty-five years ago... but I hope that the essence of what happened is helpful to someone else.
I lived in a small community, where work for teenagers was not plentiful - but I needed summer work to help pay for upcoming education. So I sat down and listed all of the skills I currently had, things I was already good at.
I contacted many of the managers and business owners in the community, and asked if I could have 10 minutes of their time. I met with them, and respectfully asked what skills they would suggest someone like me would need to develop, to be able to learn from and work in their business. Some of those conversations lasted only 10 minutes, but many of them went much longer.
I worked on the skill areas that these community leaders suggested, and went back to them, with my resume, asking them to consider me if they felt they had an appropriate position.
There were three job offers in one week.
I think that what helped was the fact that I had turned to them for their experience, knowledge, and wisdom - and listened to it - before I went to them to ask for work.
