A positive attitude, a get-it-done attitude, and a candidate who indicates desire is very important
Date: 25-Nov-2009
I got my first job when an employer called me. It happened while I was
complaining to my friends that I didn't have a job, and they were
teasing me that in order to get a job I had to apply for it.
I was
actually at my apartment swimming pool! My phone rang just then with a
job offer. This came from a friend's recommendation of me, and I didn't
know the employer, although I had heard they had an opening.
Advice to Freshers
- Keep
networking and don't think the perfect fit isn't there. Some "dead end"
jobs can lead places, but its usually getting your resume, which by the
way needs to be brilliantly written by someone other than you, in the
right hands, or offering to bring it to an interview.
- A positive attitude, a get-it-done attitude, and a candidate who indicates
desire is very important. A person can have worked for 20 years in an
industry, but may have old fashioned approach, or may have done
mediocre work all twenty years, just collecting a paycheck. Employers
know this so don't think you are not "in the running"
- Don't say
anything negative, like "I am sure you have candidates more experienced
than me". Just go with every positive about yourself and spend most of
the interview asking well-researched questions about the employer, such
as "I read that your company....., how was that handled?" Or, "what
makes this company so successful, in your (the interviewer's) opinion."
- Remember that it is just as stressful to an employer to find you as it
is for you to find them. Many business owners will name "finding good
employees" as their number one problem, so you can be a solution.
- Talk
to everyone you meet, with genuine interest in what they do, and how
they got there. You aren't necessarily looking for a job in this
process, but for information. That will result in a job.
