Desi firms score over MNCs in attracting talent
Date: 23-Sep-2010
HYDERABAD:
With the Indian economy growing fast and the job market picking up momentum,
headhunters across the country are on a hiring spree. And this time around it is
not the MNCs. The talent hunt in India Inc has got a new star under the strobe
lights - desi companies.
Industry experts say India's mid-level
executives which were once attracted to the glamor of MNCs, are now preferring
financially robust Indian firms. Experts are of the opinion that the definition
of an Indian company itself has changed over the years with a new face of India
Inc is emerging and it's not just the Wipro or Infosys.
Staffing
companies who provide manpower to companies agree that there's an increased
interest among premium talent to be part of up-and-coming ventures across
sectors like travel, telecom, healthcare, financial services, product
development and IT. Some even estimate that there is 30%-40% increased hiring in
these companies in roles such as sales and marketing compared to MNCs.
Manish Saberwal, chairman of Team lease Services, believes that the
fascination for home-grown companies has grown multifold as a direct consequence
of the economic slowdown. “The economic slowdown busted the myth that MNCs
were a safe haven. They proved to be as unsafe and unreliable as the next
company.”
“The premium associated with MNCs no longer
exists. Besides, Indian companies are getting better every day. They now realise
the importance of talented manpower and HR, so they are investing heavily in
that,” seconds Vijay Kumar of Bangalore-based Peepal Consulting.
Industry experts attribute the paradigm shift to several factors
that are attracing a large pool of talent to Indian companies. They point out
that the significant differences between MNCs and Indian companies over the
years have narrowed down. While MNCs were generally perceived to be
betterpaying, having congenial working environment and progressive, here are
several new emerging Indian companies which have similar characteristcs
now.
