AHMEDABAD: The delay in Common Admission Test (CAT) results,
caused by a technical glitch late last year, is expected to burn a hole in the pockets
of nearly 600 IIM aspirants who have been forced to apply to other top-ranking
B-schools as a fallback measure.
This year, by the time the IIMs announce the written exam results; a few
top-ranking B-Schools would have started the admission process. A few more
would even have closed the process, which may lead to some aspirants forfeiting
their initial payments in case they decide to cancel their admission after
getting through CAT.
The CAT committee usually announces results in the first half of January.
However, technical glitches have delayed the schedule by a month. Institutes
like XLRI and FMS, which published written test results recently, may announce
final results after concluding the second round of tests in early March.
“SNAP, XLRI, IRMA, FMS, and ISB, among others, are the front-runners in
announcing results. This may affect 600 to 700 students,” says Jaideep
Chowdhary, spokesperson of TIME, a management coaching institute.
Students who have to take a call on whether to wait for CAT results or secure a
seat in other B-schools may choose the latter and end up paying an initial fee.
In case of Symbiosis, the initial fee is close to Rs 1-1 .5 lakh, and the
institute will close the admission process by mid-February.
Ankit Chauhan, who cleared the XLRI written test recently, says he will join
Xavier’s management institute if he is finally selected, without waiting for
CAT results. “I am from a medical background and XLRI has several top firms
from the pharmaceutical sector coming for campus recruitment. XLRI is also not
far behind the top three IIMs in terms of ranking, so I would not hesitate in
joining XLRI,” he said.
