Employability Vs You

Hi Friends,

I was eagerly waiting to write you but was lacking any topic to share, but as we had our annual TPO conference in Mumbai on 18th of June which was organised by rangrut.com where the topic which was discussed more was employability among freshers. However there were other topics like “collaboration between industry and academia” and “campus recruitment” where expectations from the institutes and employers was kept forward. There was so much to learn in the conference and there were lots of take away from the conference.

Few take aways of the conference were:

  1. Students should be employable
  2. Institute should work on the curriculum where it can focus on practical knowledge in the final year and summer or winter trainings should not be done for name sake but that should be done keeping in mind that student should actually learn during trainings. There is no point if you are doing 1 month or 2 months training just for the sake of certificate. It’s a crime…
  3. Employers should keep an eye on all the employable students rather then using the same trend of recruiting from tier 1 institute in tier 1 cities.

And here I got the topic to be discussed.  As a student or fresher let’s keep in mind that institutes and employers are performing their responsibility well, let’s keep our own responsibility in mind where we need to be employable.

As a fresher or as a student to be employable we need to be very clear on the following things:

  1. Emphasize more on real trainings and practical leanings.
  2. Unawareness: Do you know what you want or do you want what others do?
  3. First Job: Is your first job your dream job or is it just a first job?
  4. Dream Job: What is your dream job and which is your dream company?
  5. Communication skills: Essential part to be employable.
  6. Do not rely on any training companies which ask for money against placements. 95 percent of them are fake.
  7. If you have doubts in selecting companies focus more on company of your interest where you have a learning opportunities rather than company giving high packages.
  8. Employers hire for attitude and they train you for skills.
  9. Do not bother about technical skills so much because for fresher even companies are not always sure for which project you are hired.
  10. Make yourself strong in aptitude followed by attitude and then comes the technical knowledge.
  11. Keep your eyes open as there are ample of opportunities waiting for you.
  12. Always keep in mind that even interviewers need you as much as you need them. Requirement is equal on both the sides.

There is so much to be covered but I will prefer to cover all the topics one by one in my next articles. Meanwhile I expect from you all to think about the above points as they are self explanatory. You can undergo an employability exercise by thinking about all the points. Write it down for you and do let me know what all you have gathered from this article followed by your own thoughts about them.

Do share your feedback through your comments :) I will be happy to read your comments.

You mention some very critical points like knowing what to look for. I think many fresh graduates often lack this insight into what is it that they want to do. Succmbing to peer pressure is not all that uncommon. For many people money is the only decision point, but what they overlook is that if its a job that they would happily get up on a Monday morning for, they will make money by anyway, on the other hand if they ended up in a job they don\'t have a slightest inclination towards, they might earn a big sum for a few months before having to look for another job. Also, i think its equally crucial for the schools and prospective employers to have a regular communication so that the courses are balanced to provide/hone industry grade skills as well as academic understanding. Communication skills, team work, leadership are few such skills that have to be promoted more at graduate level courses in addition to the technical know-how. Infact, schools should also nurture entrepreneurship, so that the people with an idea can also find help not too far from their school.

Thanks for the interest shown in educating/ guiding the students to chose a right path.
The colleges and companies should reduce putting pressure on students and conduct placements in a relaxed manner.
I wish to provide a comment/suggestion on statement 6 which states that \"Do not rely on any training companies which ask for money against placements. 95 percent of them are fake\". I\'ve seen fresher’s paying lot of money for crash courses, even after finishing the course; they are in same confusing that what they\'ve learnt? And how is it useful to them? I wish Rangrut to publish an article on what a student should do after he/she comes out of the college without an offer letter in hand? Provide details about the institutions which provides good coaching and which has excellent placement records. The one such kind of Training institutions I know is CDAC.

That is absolutely true, that Employers hire freshers for their attitude, and freshers really need to understand it, because if they can improve their attitude it will always work as key of success to them.

I\'m an MBA final year student, I think focus on case studies, management games and seminars can help to grow students mentally, practically strong during college days. One more think I would like to share with all my friend that if you could not qualify any interview, you should be depressed because whatever you have and what interviewer would like to see in you both are different think , you are best quality washing machine but they want cooler so..you are not bad , you are the best in different field. try for next , u r v much precious..
