Title : Advice to Students & Job seekers by Industry Professionals

Go through with the latest added Advices by Professionals from Britannia, Mphasis, Biocon, Accenture, Tata Elexi,

As a part of company I can say that: I am looking for a person who is going to manage ambiguity, who is going to manage uncertainty, who is fair, trustworthy and high in values and who is going to manage risk.So overall if I put that into one basket I am looking at an entrepreneur.

Are you in your institute developing entrepreneur skills in your people?? Are you developing leaders or good team members?

I think it is very important for students to understand and think what is that I am looking for? Am I looking for a career or I am looking for money? The choice is his, we can’t influence that.

When we talk about career, the packages the flip side is that the package is not about money, it is tagged with stronger stuff into it in terms of knowledge, exposure, projects, ventures etc. A student should think about it in long terms prospective.

Mr Arindam Chakraborty, Corporate HRM, Britannia

My Advice to the first time job seekers and fresh graduates would be: new

1.      Your career starts not when you graduate from your institute but your career starts the day you join institute.

2.      It’s important that you have fun, you have your own share of all the campus adventures but at the same time it’s very important that you take your curriculum very seriously.

3.      You should also look at what is the critical success factors which are required to make you survive and be successful in the corporate world.

4.      How do you use your time in the campus, not just to complete your curriculum but also built some of those capabilities

5.      So Focus on what you want to do, what career you want to built, how did you get there from the day one when you enter the campus and not on the last day when you get out of the campus?

6.      I am sure with the above things you will get a great profession.

Mr Narayanan Nair Head - Human Resources at MphasiS

Well I think you have to set your sights high and you have to work at it. Nothing comes easy in life and really what is very important for a student is to be persistent. You have to be able to keep working on whatever goals you have set. Never give up, just keep trying. Sooner or later you will reach your goal.

Mr Ravi C Dasgupta Head Group HR, Biocon

My advice to first job seekers:

One is about the leadership: While leadership is generally spoken about as a trait reserved for people who have been living with a kind of status in life. I find that leadership is all about individual. Leadership starts right from your college days. Even at your home your child is a leader in some sense so every student needs to understand that he or she is also a leader. He or she is leading that particular subject. When that person gets a first job, in that first job that person also has to lead that particular thing. He or she may be master of that particular thing and no body knows better than him or her. He or she may have the innovation or creative ideas. Then why not lead? So that's the first point.

Number two is to lead with passion. Something which you are proud of, you are confident about leaded with passion, with love then the energy is seen by everyone. People sometimes know that you do not have experience, people know that you might not have got huge amount of years behind you but people know that your are excited, you have energy, you are dedicated, you are self driven, you are creative and that can not go unnoticed. That is always taken by people.

Mr Rahul Dev VP HR, Accenture

Every college has a certain brand that’s why the organization come to them but ultimately the selection depends upon how a student performs in the interview. The interviewer is assessing your knowledge level and ability to apply that knowledge so it’s important that your fundamentals are strong.

1.       They look at how you are able to approach a problem. They are not so bothered about the correctness of your answers but rather the approach to the problem correct. Similarly are would assess how logical you are in your thinking.

2.       Finally the key think is your learning ability because how much you have learnt that’s only a small portion. There is a lot of learning that you need to do on the job because technology is changing rapidly and you need to continually learn in order to be on the top.

3.       People are looking that what you have done other than your studies. How have you channelled your energy in extra curricular activities that help build your personality?

4.       Once you get into the organization, what is important is your ability to work with other people. It’s not just your knowledge which is important, but how you use your knowledge and work along with other people and produce better result. People who are loners may now find difficult it because now they have to be dependent on other people in system to produce better result.

Mr Philip Mammen, Vice President - Human Resources at Tata Elxsi

My Advice to all the students and first job seeker is :

                     1) They should be very disciplined in the process

                     2) They should be hard working

                     3) Committed towards their work

                     4) They should do their assignments properly

                     5) They should try and understand whatever is thought in the class

                     6) They should try and apply it to the real life situations

                     7) They should work out for every problem that was there at the end of

                          the chapter.

                     8) They should learn to ask more questions

I think if they do all of these things, they would be wonderful

Mr NR Narayana Murthy Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies Ltd.

a) For first job seekers I would say that you have to think of not only a job but a profession, a long term career that is a very firm belief I have, now a days first jobseekers are looking at short term scenario, they are looking at jobs. You should have stability in mind. So look at profession, don’t look at a job.

b) Relate yourself with the real word and not only with the bookish knowledge.

The tendency of people who are recruited from a campus is that they remain very bookish, extremely bookish and they want to carry it to the work place. The work place doesn’t function according to what you have studied.

c) The sooner you try to get out of the course related books, get closer to the real world, read a lot what is currently going on, read news papers, magzines, read as much as possible.

d) Try to get your fundamentals clear that will help you in a big way.

e) Try to keep your eyes and ears open. I keep on telling it to batches after batches that if you are in a particular role you only think of that role. For example- If you are in a credit department, don’t think that your role is only credit. The Bank is a larger place as I said if you are planning long term, you may be the CEO of organization in which you have to do a lot of other things but only if you are planning long term.

f) Read, read and read because that will enhance your value in the job market. The moment prospective employers come to know that you are not only good in credit but you have so much knowledge in other areas of banking, then it’s a big value addition for you.

Asish SenGupta Senior Vice President, HR, Axis Bank

The advice would be:

1.       To go beyond their books

2.       To try & connect to what they study and what practically is happening in the market .the world outside, in the economy

3.       They should be well aware of how to apply their skills in which they are well rather than answering the questions in the same way as they are in the text books.

4.       They need to focus on application skills

5.       A large focus should also be on Communication, not necessarily talking about English, it’s just the ability to focus their ideas and just be able to express them

6.       A real and longer summer training or a stint of field work

7.       And Ultimately  an Ability to learn, ability to lead & correct attitude.

Mr. K.S. Kumar EVP-Human Capital, Fullerton India.

Employers want the candidate to have already established that this job is the job they are uniquely gifted for - one in which they will become an irreplaceable talent - not a stop over until the candidate finds out what they really want to do for work. I was an Executive Sales Leader for 10+ years - on the hiring side of bringing new talent on - which included first job seekers - and I have just written a book on this topic. OPEN SESAME: Why It's All About ACCESS for the New Worker of the 21st Century. First Time job seekers need to know that to survive and thrive in this global age (and current recession) they must become an irreplaceable talent.

Marilyn Carpenter Owner at V. James Coaching Consortium

Keep your fundaments very clear.
Analytical and conceptual thinking of situation (to apply the book knowledge in your work).
Have patience.
And lastly, be true and be yourself [ you need to realise yourself truly]

Dhiraj Kumar Presales Head (Enterprise) - India @ Aircel

Take a job that is practical, to give you a sound base. Don't jump into too corporate a job else the academic and reality gap is not bridged. These are the jobs your peers will avoid but are the ones the will mould your character and experience as you rise

Valkyn D'mello - Indonesia logistics and sourcing specialist, organizational development expert.

I suggest that first time job seekers become very realistic in their expectations for their first professional job. Hopefully they have had an internship experience in their chosen professional field and understand the business of the organization they wish to join. Research on the organization, honesty in the interview process, and solid preparation from the school's career services function is critical. You only get to make a fist impression once. So, make sure it is the right impression. Also, some pearls of wisdom from a wonderful mentor of mine which I live by..."if your pearls aren’t polished, they won't shine. So, be prepared with resume in hand, examples of how you have and can make an impact for the organization.

Mary Persky - SPHR SR. HRG at MetLife

I would advise them to be flexible and keep an open mind

Barbara Gilmour, PHR Sr. Recruiter/HR Professional

That approach and confidence are everything.
And, that preparation for interviews is more than ever key.

Randi Shapiro Founder and President, Recruiting Specialists, INC

1. Students should maximize their communication with their alumni and find out what exactly the companies are seeking in new hires (esp. fresher). This way they can start preparing well in advance and be ready when the companies come for  Bookmark and Share
